In My Style Journal: Lupita Nyong'o

If you had been following the Awards season then you would know the overnight fashion success of Lupita Nyong'o. The Kenyan beauty stars in the hugely popular 12 Years A slave alongside Chiwetel Ejiofor. Who is she if you may ask? Well she is of Kenyan descent, graduate Yale class of 2012 and is a seriously beautiful African American young woman, who really isn't new to the Hollywood scene. Alot of the international media and fashion bloggers are taking notice of Lupita, but I particularly like her for her fashion choices. Stylist or no stylist, her clothing choices are effortless, chic and classy all at the same time with subtle but yet lovely make-up.

One of the defining features about Lupita is her hair! It's short, functional and neat! And of course I love that it is different, and gives her, her own Signature essence (which really actually makes her stand out). As of late, Lupita is doing a fantastic job in my opinion, bringing in an allure of pure class and demure. I would like to believe she is a style icon in the making.

Yours in Glamour,
Tendai Sophia

Psst... you can also check out Lupita as one of the new faces for Miu Miu's Spring/Summer 2014 campaign. You can Thank me later!

In My Style Journal: Rihanna

In this month’s segment of In My style journal, I’m focusing on the over the top and overtly charismatic star Miss Rihanna; a lady of many controversies. Now its no lie I’m a fan of Rihanna only because I admire her confidence and her edgy persona that she incorporates in all her fashion looks. Even more so I’m dying to see what her River Island collection for London will look like. I can’t wait for the editorials and advertisements!

So the focus of this post is the many styles Miss RiRi has been pulling out since the onset of 2013. The last 5 months have been abit of a whirlwind on her part but quite frankly to say there have been my favourite looks so far. She has been incorporating a lot of denim and leather in her looks in her own distinct Rihanna fashion (which I like). Although she maybe way to over the top, you can’t sideline the girl for making bold choices in her clothing.

I learned from a fellow blogger Zanele that this all denim on denim look is called the "canadian tuxedo". I was intrigued by the name.
My favourite look so far. The little mint colour leather skirt with the low unbuttoned blouse. Its safe to say i'll wear this.
Red red lady.
My focus here is on the tangerine looking leather jacket. Such a lovely colour.

I personally really like denim and these pants are just something different. Out of the ordinary.
When i saw this i thought of the 90s with Salt n' Pepper and TLC.

In My Style Journal: Victoria Beckham

"In My Style Journal" is a new monthly article that I wanted to start, showcasing women in the entertainment industry whose fashion and style I admire. I dont want this to be another blog post bombarded with celebrity pictures, but more of an understanding of my personal style and who i'm inspired by.
I love the essence of being a modern, sophisticated 21st century lady with a mixture of the 50s era and a twist of boho-chic. Most of the female celebrities in these posts are individuals who carry a body shape such as my own; which is tall, slim and leggy hence the body of your average model.
I feel fashion is catered for every body type and hence i believe not to squeeze myself where i dont fit.
As Rachel Zoe once said "Its not bad to copy a celebrity-that's what they are there for!

My first ultimate inspiration is non-other than fashion designer, musician, mother and fashionista rolled into one; Victoria Beckham.
I admire VB because from the airport to the red carpet she always looks fabulous. One of the few celebs who stays true to herself and her love for fashion. You cant go wrong with Louboutins and an Hermes tote.

Always stunning and always polished; True Fashion.

Little do people know that VB actually started the short hair craze that was later labelled "the Rihanna Cut". I did my research,

Jeggings!

Jeggings have been around since 2009, taking over from the leggings. I for one was not very keen on jeggings cause I had seen a nasty side to them so frankly I never bought a pair. But last week Friday (16 November) I had a change of heart when I bought my first pair of jeggings at Edgars first street corner Kwame Nkrumah avenue for $17.00. They are in this gorgeous wine red colour which is completely out of the box from what I normally wear. Frankly I had been eyeing these jeggings for almost two weeks, having first spotted them at Edgars Eastgate on my study break (I tried to be a good girl and not get carried away but I couldn’t help it). So my new infactuation over my new jeggings inspired me to write a little something on jeggings:

Jeggings are defined as leggings that are styled to look like tight denim jeans. Jeggings were brought about by the re-emergence of the skinny jean style. They are typically made of denim with a cross in of a spandex blend. They are typically two kinds of jeggings with reference to material;
  1.   Jeggings that are legging material made to look like denim, sometimes they have an elastic waistband without pockets (this describes my new jeggings).
  2.  Jeggings that are somewhat a true cross between denim and legging material. They are essentially a demin fabric with elasticity of a legging.
If you are a fashionista you would know that Jeggings are characteristic of the 1980’s era, with the likes of Madonna and Cyndi Lauper, in bold coloured print and the ripped-punk look. Nowadays, they are usually rocked by Kim Kardashian, Jessica Alba and Zoe Saldana.

My traumatising memory is that (No Offence here) but Zim girls have a tendency of wearing them all WRONG!

Here’s my version of the Jegging Top 5 (for some Zim ladies of course);
  1. Jeggings are synonymous with tall, leggy and slender models, meant to give the slim illusion of a sleek look characteristic of models on a runaway (if you work it right, you can apply this in reality).
  2. Jeggings are not (I repeat NOT) meant to be worn as regular pants with a tee shirt or a short shirt that sits on your bum! It is required that you wear a long blouse or long camisole that covers your bum and hip area so that the jeggings evenly slims you out or you’ll end up looking like your wearing leggings! (this applies to the well built and strong boned curvy girl, if your slender like me then you can getaway with it!)
  3. You can also pair your long blouse with a long blazer to give the illusion that you are wearing skinny jeans. (Kim K does it best with this look).
  4. However you can only get away with jeggings that have a pocket detail because from afar they look like slim skinnies of slim fitting pants.
  5. And finally, leggings and jeggings are two completely different things! Don’t treat them the same!
I hope you will learn something from this post, because to be frank I learned ALOT about jeggings that I didn’t even know and it was only befitting that I share it.

Love This Label: The Row

I’m pretty sure everyone is familiar with the Olsen Twins, Mary-Kate and Ashley. We literally grew up watching these girls from their little days on Full House right up to their sitcoms and movies such as “New York Minute”. I mean there was a point were these girls owned the Movie Industry but now they’ve taken on a new venture, from Actors to Designers. I’m loving their clothing line “The Row” which was launched in 2007 and has a very boho-chic theme to it. This time around I love their Spring 2012 collection consisting of flowing white tops and pants. The look is baggy, oversized clothing with a relaxed feeling to them. No wonder the girls scooped the award for Women’s wear Designer of the Year at the 2012 Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA) Fashion Awards in New York  on June 4, 2012. Gotta love ‘em!

I’ve been a huge fan of the Olsen Twins and their clothing line sets them above the rest with a full collection on leather handbags (my fave) and jewelry, it’s a shame that “The Row” is only restricted in the USA. I think its time they moved ashore…..in Africa maybe.
